Pair of Shanghai Art Deco Armchairs – c.1930
- Colour:Brown woodwork, yellow/gold covering
- Dimensions:92 x 65 x 82 (h x w x d)
- Country of origin:China
- Age/era:1930
- Collection:Pickup: Hillcrest, Hamilton, 3216
- Product details:A rare and beautifully proportioned pair of Chinese Art Deco armchairs, believed to date from the late 1920s to early 1930s. Believed to have originated from Shanghai's famous French Concession, where European Art Deco met exceptional Chinese craftsmanship during the city's glamorous pre-war golden age. We purchased these over 25 years ago from an established antique dealer in Hong Kong, who represented them as original Shanghai Art Deco pieces. They have remained together as a matching pair ever since. The elegant sweeping hardwood arms, geometric detailing and substantial craftsmanship are all characteristic of the distinctive Art Deco furniture produced in Shanghai during its golden era. They have since been professionally reupholstered in a quality period-style fabric that complements their timeless design. These are not ordinary vintage chairs. They are sculptural statement pieces that are equally at home in a contemporary interior, an Art Deco home, or alongside mid-century and designer furniture. We are currently researching their history further and will happily provide additional photographs of the construction and underside to interested buyers. An increasingly uncommon opportunity to acquire a matching pair with a wonderful story and provenance. These chairs have attracted interest from collectors in Singapore and Hong Kong and will be shipped for auction in Singapore if not sold in NZ. It would be nice to keep them here. Only being sold because our new house will have a different design aspect. Note, the first two photographs are artistic recreation illustrating how these chairs may have appeared in a 1930s Shanghai interior. All subsequent photographs are of the actual chairs.
